Ayurveda and Ataxia

Ayurveda on spinocerebellar ataxia:

All movement-related illnesses are classified as Vata Vyadhi in Ayurveda. Vata governs coordination, because all fluid and precise actions require coordination. When Vata becomes excessive, it creates problems with coordination and movement.

Cerebrospinal ataxia causes the same coordination problems. When Vata is not functioning properly, the coordination of body movements is disrupted, causing problems for those affected. In the context of cerebrospinal ataxia, there are two things to keep in mind regarding Vata Dosha:

Because Vata aggravation promotes decline, decline with Vata aggravation is always on the higher side. Controlling disease progression is also a constant challenge.

Treatment of spinocerebellar ataxia:

Ayurvedic remedies and treatments can be given to treat cerebral and cerebellar ataxia/atrophy. This management is known as Samana Chikitsa and Shodhana Chikitsa. Shodhana Chikitsa involves Panchakarma Ayurvedic treatments, while Samana Chikitsa covers maintenance with internal medications and external applications.
