Ajeerna

Indigestion can be described as a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen, belching, loss of appetite, and altered bowel habits. This could be due to a change in eating habits, food contamination, or a sudden change in daily routine or lifestyle.

Ayurveda has described these conditions as Ajeerna. According to Ayurveda, indigestion occurs due to an incorrect diet and an inadequate daily routine. A poor diet means consuming too many fried foods, meats, and sweets, as well as improper food combinations and mixing too many foods in one meal. Overeating and eating before the last meal has been fully digested can also cause indigestion. Similarly, consuming too much coffee, alcohol, and tobacco also disrupts normal digestive function. Staying up late, emotional disturbances such as stress, pain, and anxiety, and taking many medications, such as antibiotics, painkillers, and steroids, are other contributing factors to digestive disorders.

In all types of indigestion, fasting is necessary for at least one meal. After this, when the patient feels hungry, they should be given lemon water, boiled vegetables, or soup. Many Ayurvedic remedies exist for treating digestive disorders. However, a distinction must be made between acute indigestion and a chronic condition.

Classical Ayurvedic remedies used for such conditions include churna lavanbhaskar, churna hingashtak, and churna avipattikar. The well-known bhasma shankh or vati shankh, when taken with lemon water, also yields very good results. Many more effective remedies exist for severe cases of indigestion, but these should only be used under the supervision of a physician.

Mild cases of indigestion can usually be relieved with certain home remedies. Here are some tips:

Chewing a small piece of fresh ginger with table salt 5 or 10 minutes before meals is good for stimulating digestion.

Take equal amounts of black pepper, dried mint leaves, powdered ginger, coriander seeds, cumin, fennel seeds, and anise seeds. Grind them together to make a fine powder. Take one teaspoon of this powder twice a day after meals.

Drinking a little liquid yogurt after breakfast or lunch improves digestion only if the meal was vegetarian. Adding a little roasted cumin seed powder with a pinch of salt to the liquid yogurt increases its effectiveness.

Precautions:

Digestive disorders are a very common problem in modern lifestyles. Classical Ayurvedic texts generally advise a light and easily digestible diet. The most important rule to follow is to avoid overeating and eating before the previous meal has been digested. Sleeping immediately after dinner causes food to remain undigested in the stomach for longer, leading to digestive discomfort in the early morning. People prone to frequent indigestion are advised to undergo Panchakarma treatment to eliminate accumulated toxins and regulate their digestive system.
